Last thur,19feb 2009,after the consultation, we are told to thing more on hardship n glamour then we thought of using something to represent the hardship. Then we thought of using a bee because it is a very hardworking worker. We want to let the user experience how tedious and difficult it is to sew the motif on the gown. Therefore we add in a little difficulty in the interactivity.
But on mon,23feb2009, we were told that the bee concept that we came up with have dirfted from our theme, we need to pull back the factors and remind ourselves that our topic is on peranakan wedding. The bee have no relation to peranakan and environment and interactive have nothing to do with peranakan wedding. This interactive can be a sewing lesson, it does not show the whole peranakan wedding. Looking at the exhibit will not show information about peranakan wedding. There is no connection with wedding. Therefore we were advise to look into the previous concept. After the consultation, we relook into the concept and think of another way to present the exhibit so that it will bring a clearer message to the user. There will be 3 rooms in there, the first one will go through the choosing of material next will be the experiencing the hardship about the sewing and another path which will let the user not go through the hardship and is to a more "glamour" path where we define glamour as spoiled for choice. Then the last room will allow them to learn about the layers of clothes worn inside the gown.
On today's consultation, we were told that the seperating of path will be too literally hardship and glamour. For the first room, we were told to look into the technology aspects as well as where will the user focus their eyes on and to tell the user more about the different material. On the 3rd room, we will need to look into techonology aspect and the logic flow. For example, what type of material is the screen made of as well as what will happen when the user does something. (affordance, constraint and feedback)

Monday, February 23, 2009

After a consultation with Mr Andrew today, we had realised that our garden concept is far too disconnected from peranakan culture. there is no conenction between bee and peranakan, which will cause confusion in the visitors as they will not know that the exhibit is linked to peranakan wedding. we were told to explore more on comparing to show more on our theme, hardship and glamour. after getting feedbacks from others, we had decided to combine our 2 initial ideas.

we wanted to try to engage the users with our interaction in other ways. we had also decided to work on the way of 'raw material, sewing/choosing of the motif and also the wearing of the wedding gown.

our idea starts with the user touching the showcase of cloth quailties used for making of the wedding gown. when the user touches the cloth, visual feedback of different motif moving around on the cloth will be shown. e.g. motifs of butterfly will be flying around on the cloth that the user had touched. this feedback is included to engage the users more, and also to make them be more curious about the rest of the exbits.

following on will be 2 different paths for the user to choose. they can either choose to sew the motif, or be able to view the meaning of the most commonly used motif on wedding gown, the phoenix and peony.

on choosing the sewing path, the users will be lead to a room with a sewing machine big enough for 3-4 users to operate. users who are alone, will be able to step on the paddle and operate the machine, but with the help of other users, this tiring process can be ended faster. the speed of the motif being completed will depend on how fast the paddle is going. upon completing the whole motif, the motif will then be 'alive' and show the user what does it means.

if the user decides to go by the other path, they will be brought to a virtual land with a peranakan feel. in this land, they will be treated to a show of visual effects of the phoenix flying gracefully around, which will show the meaning of phoenix. the same goes for the peony motif. at a certain time, the 2 motifs will cross each other path, wiping out the original individual meaning of each motif, and replacing them with the combined meaning of both motif.

both of the paths will lead to the dressing room, where the user will see themselves being projected on a screen, where they will be required to wear the wedding gown which is deteched through gestures of the user. as there's many different layers that the bride is required to wear, the users will have to trail and error on which goes first. however, they are only allowed 3 tries and when all 3 tries are used up, the correct way of wearing the wedding gown.

The Latest

After the consultation yesterday,
we realised that our concept was going off from the main concept which is to potray hardship & glamourous.
after much consultation and feedbacks gained from Ms Tina & Ms Esther,
we decided to combine two ideas together which is the traditional & garden theme.

So here's our draft of our new concept to potray more of the wedding gown rather than having many segments which can be very confusing for us & visitors as we realised there is no focal point of the exhibits.

after showing Mr Andrew our traditional concept yesterday, we were told to explore more on the theme, which is hardship and glamour. after breaking down serveral aspect of our traditional concept, and thinking of how we can represent hardship and glamour, we had came up with our garden concept in relation to the bee. as we had realised that the hardship and the glamour both needs each other. glamour wont be there without the hardship and hardship needs the glamour to survive. just like a bee works hard to collect honey for themselves, and honey wont exsit if there's no bee.

the hardship of making a wedding gown is usually the person who is sewing it, but they are often forgotten. however, the end product which is the wedding gown is always the limelight of the event. which is rather similar to the concept of bee and honey, bee being the person who's sewing and honey being the wedding gown. we wanted to show and let the users feel how tiring and tedious it is to sew a wedding gown together.

Information Flowchart for our garden concept

the idea of having the visitors to be able to leave a 'mark' which is the motif done by them, is to allow multipal user's participation in completing the wedding gown. as for how the outcome of the motif will be like will depend on how much effort the user had placed in during the sewing part. the planning by the user may also affect the end result. we had included a way for the user to undo their mistakes by allowing them to retrace their action to show how fustrating it will be, to just try to solve the mistake.

Kim Choo's House Visits.

An overall image of the kim choo's house that we visited on tuesday,17 february 2009.

By visiting the kim choo's house,
it brings us to another level of understanding about the peranakan culture in depth.

Other than that,
being surrounded by kebayas and beaded accessories set up the peranakan atmosphere in the shop's itself.

We felt beautiful and calm .

And we actually manage to see how a nyonya sewing the beads for the beaded shoes.

From what i saw,
it requires patience ,fine skills and most importantly, a good eyesight during the sewing of small tiny beads.

So today,
after experiencing the visit to kim choo's house.
we are able to develop more ideas from the experience itself.
W have also created several rough moodboard to mix and match with the concepts that might works with the atmosphere itself.

We also did a rough layout floorplan sketch of how our new exhibits will look like.

1) traditional theme

2)garden theme

3)boutique theme

All of these exhibits sketch is subject to change as we ae always prompting new ideas to make it interesting & interactively for the visitors to experience.

Hafiza Ahmad
floor plan of wedding idea

when the visiors first enter the exhibiton, they will first see the so called work room of making the wedding gown.

at the working table, will be where the users can find sewing machines, which allows them to be able to experience the feeling of trying to place the thread in the correct areas, purpose is to let them experience the feel of using the sewing machine.

at the left of the exhibition, will be a display of the different quailty of cloths used to make the wedding gown. according to researches, the quality of thread and cloth used will affect the color of the gown after years. this exhibition will be placed high, but visiors will be able to reach and feel for themselves, the different quality of the cloths.

towards the back of the first room, the visitors will see a seperator which is made with hanging batik from the wall. this hanging batik is to showcase the different batik designs.

upon crossing the batik seperator, the visitor will see themselves being projected on a screen, where they will be required to wear the wedding gown which is deteched through gestures of the user. as there's many different layers that the bride is required to wear, the users will have to trail and error on which goes first.

behind the screen, will be a showcase of the wedding gown, worn the correct way. at the back of the room, will be a showcase of different wedding gowns with different motifs. these motifs will be interactive, example will be the butterfly motif, when the visitor is to walk close to the clothe, the butterfly will start flying on the clothe. upon touching the butterfly, the user will be able to see the meaning of the motif shown by the butterfly.

but the comment for this idea was as wendy stated in the previous post, Mr Andrew had stated that there's no backbone to the concept, thus, we had came up with another idea.

18 feb 2009

On Wednesday, we brainstorm out new ideas. First we state what we want to do on, what information we want to highlight, what is the atmosphere of the exhibit, what we want them to experience. Then we decide to work on the different wedding gown worn during the the 12 days. Informations we want to highlight will be how do they wear the clothes, what are the motifi on the clothes and how do they make the clothes. Then we thought of making using curve lines to show the femine look of the woman, we will then seperate the room into 2 with batik sarongs a acting as a divider. At one side it will be showing the process of how the gown is made, then the other side will be the showcase of the gown. At the showcase of the gown we will show the meaning of the motif and how they actually wear the gown using interactive media.

Mr andrew's comment was that the idea do not have a "backbone" to have the whole thing as a connection. We need to create a new experience for the visitors. We will need to break rules and think about the visitors. Will they be tired after thinking and doing all the interactive parts will there be too much informations for them to absorb? How do we engage the people? We were also told to look into different kinds of museum.

17 feb 2009

On tuesday, we went down to the peranakan museum for a talk by the educator of the museum. At the beginning she wanted us to explore like a visitor can state our questions about the exhibit on a big piece of paper. First we are not allowed to touch the exhibit then we are allowed to touch the exhibit. At the beginning i was wondering why we are not allowed to touch at first then the 2nd time we are allowed to. Then after the whole thing, i then realise that how interaction with the exhibit is different from unable to interact with it. The questions stated out are different. For example, we may think that this particular object looks like it is made of metal and its very heavy but till we touch it then we realise it is not and the next question will be what is the object made of then. After observing other groups on did they state about each exhibit, we realise that most of them will talk about the motif on the object, material used, what is it for.

The presentor stated out a few practical problem they have met when doing the exhibit and told us how the museum exhibit actually works. We always need to assume that all visitors come in a blank mind and knows nothing about the museum, the exhibit show case need to be simple and clear for the people to understand. Level of language used need to engage the right age group, lauguage used need not to be too difficult because children do visit museums. We need to select the informations we want to highlight to the visitors, which are educating and which are not. Exhibits for not allowed to touch usually is because it will leave a mark behind and most of the exhibits are very expendsive. Those that can be touch usually are fake ones. When show casing exhibits, we need to consider whether to put 2 or more similar objects side by side because this will lead visitors to compare and leave more questions behind. We also need to consider that do we state the exact time the object is made or do we just need to state how long it is. It will usually be easier for children to understand " 10 years ago" than " made in year 2000". We need to consider what baba malay to put in and how much of baba malay to put in because most visitors do not know all this lauguage. Why do we want to put baba malay then? It is to have a little knowledge on baba malay as well as to put in more feel and depth of peranakans.

We are also told that the curator is someone who finds all the information and exhibit, he/she will then come out with themes on the exhibit. A designer is someone who creates the feel/ atmosphere of the exhibit. An educator is someone who moderate the exhibit provided by the curator. She/ he will discuss with the curator what have educational value, what level of lauguage, what type of lauguage to use, whether it can be expose to the public, how much will visitors learn from the exhibits.

She also pointed out to us the morderate experience for the visitors to absorb and how to engage all the senses. With many informations and interactive elements will it be too much for the visitors? How much is too much then?

After the talk, we went down to katong and find "Kim choo"a peranakan shop that sell kebayas and wedding gown. We interviewed Mr Raymond, the owner of the shop and asked him serveral questions on the wedding gown as well as the kebaya, motifs on it and from the answers we realise that the bride actually not only wear one layer of clothes outside shown in the museum but they do wear other clothes underneath. This includes the white clothes which reprents purity and peranakan also believes that after they die they will put on the white clothes again so that they will be able to meet at the underworld again. They will also put on alot of different jewelleries and head dress that made the whole gown with all the jewels weigh almost 20 kg. We also took some pictures and know the different type of clothes peranakan wear and where it orgins as well as what did they wear at the very beginning.

Wendy
we had come up with a new idea, working on the process of making the wedding costume and the different kind of clothes wore by the bride during the wedding. meanings of the diferent motif used will also be shown to the visitors.

we were told to find an overall theme and also to refine on the idea.

due to technical problem (my scanner is not working =_= ), i will post more on our idea tomorrow after using the scanner in school. sorry.

yesterday, on 17 feb, Tueday, we went down to the peranakan museum once again, to attend the talk by an educator of the asian civilisation museum, Ms Wong Sui Lee. she had pointed out several points which was not considered by us.

  • assume that all visitors know nothing about peranakan.
  • touching of artifects should be reduced, due to wear and tear(darkening caused by particle deposits from fingers)
  • visitors tend to go for either exhibits that are interesting to them, or exhibits that are familar or that they can relate to.
  • the amount of details provided should be moderated, to suit the need of the users. (e.g. kids do not have to know the whole string of years, instead, using a rough estimation, like 19th centry will be absorbed easier by them.)
  • to always keep in mind that providing too much information can be too over whelming for the visitors.
  • the duration of stay of the visitors at the museum and at a particular exhibit. (2hours at the museum)
  • try to look at the exhibition as a whole.
  • having a highlight will help in enhancing the experience.
  • the average education or age of visitors will be 16 years old and 9 years old for children.
  • the different limitation to consider. (time, space, money, artifects)
  • the enviroment and feel to be given.
the museum workshop ended with a question and answer section with Ms Wong and Mr Yang Tian, where many different views and reasons on the museum is discussed.

al of us then proceed to Katong and East Coast area, where we visited the Kim Choo Holdings, and Mr Raymond, the owner had educated us with alot of rich information on the peranakan wedding culture and costume.

one of the most interesting fact is that the bride, actually wears 4 layers of clothes in total, weighting aroud 20kg in total with the headress and the bamboo jacket to support the shape of the clothe. another interesting fact that he said was about how the quality of the thread used can affect the colors and quality of the clothe in long run.

What is a museum?

a museum is a place that allows the younger generation to understand their own's culture better and also to let locals or tourists to understand the culture better. A museum is a place that preseve the different history, culture and artifacts from the past.Other than that, it gathers evidence from the past and put it together as a true facts rather than make-believe or myths.

Why is the exhibit i'm working on placed in the museum?

As the traditional peranakan wedding is disappearing in this society due to modernisation, the museum which holds the exhibit helps to keep the culture alive. Visitors are able to see the whole traditional peranakan wedding in the museum. Peranakan wedding can be mixed up with other cultures such as the malay & the chinese weddings since all three of them have similarities in their weddings.Through small details in the peranakan wedding, it potrays the peranakan beliefs in their society rather than being confused by the malay and chinese culture due to their similarities.

Why is the interactive installation propopsed in the museum?
can your exhibit be placed in the museum or anywhere else? why?

an interactive installation creates an experience which helps the visitors to learn and absorb the different informations better. as the impression of the installation is much deeper, the users will be able to remember the details and information better then a whole block of text for them to read. a successful interactive installation not only allows to user to interact with the installation, but also to other visitors of the museum.

our exhibit can be placed in the museum as it is related to the peranakan's culture, their wedding. however, our exhibit can also be placed in other museum which is exhibiting about the peranakan's culture.

What data can you obtain from the visitors/surrounding and how can the data be used as a part of an interaction?

Gender, occupation, race, age & their reaction to the museum. the above information collected can be used as resources on the gender, age group and occupation of visitors. feedback of the application i.e. if the application is confusing or is it easy to use. the data collected can be used in designing the refinement of the installation.

Wednesday to Sunday

On wed, after the consultation, we are told that the ideas did not require much of interactivity.Exhibit needs to engage the audience, visitors can learn through interactivity. Need to look through the requirements. Therefore we relook in our ideas and try to futher develop the ideas. We try to think of more ideas too and try input multisensory and participation in the ideas.

We did research on the preparation before the wedding. We pointed out different facts and then bring them together and see whether we can combine this facts.

On thursday, we came together again and combine the ideas. Then we split the jobs to the Hafiza and Natasha will do on their podcast showing what types of visuals they will like to use and shuyun will do on the illustration part as for me, I did on the powerpoint slides, combing the key research and our concepts.

On friday, after the presentation, the teacher pointed out to us that the concepts are not connected and there are no linkage in the concept. The concepts is like different ideas scatter around and put together. Therefore, the teacher wanted us to do research on installation technology, look at other people's work, look through the things we need to do and see if we have skip any steps. By refreshing our mind with new things, hopefully we will get inspired from there.

After the presentation, we decided to relook into our concept and realise that our concept is on surface and we do not exactly know what we are doing and just combine ideas withour a "theme" therefore it becomes very scatter. We decided to research and think of ideas in a full view and not think of interactive directly from the exhibit. We need to think about the experience and will the visitors learn through our concept or we are just providing the informations in visuals. Is it a passive interactivity? How do we make it non-linear? What is non-linear?What is the purpose of it? With all this questions in our head, we went back home and answer this questions according to what we research and understand about it.

During the weekend, I actually realise that the whole concept we came out is just passive interactive and there is no purpose behind the interactive. The experience we want the visitors to have is not exactly experince. Non- linear to me is something unpredictable, the purpose of the concepts we are coming out with is to let them learn. After thinking through the points, i brainstorm out the using keywords like wedding, process, clothes, jewels etc. Then i slowly realise that process is a very wide range to approach and difficult to put together clearly as one when we want to, the whole thing becomes very general and unclear it will then lose it's real meanin which is to let visitors learn and absorb fast.

Then i look through interactive technology to see what ideas i can come out with it but i realise that i will tend to skip steps and look into interactivity first and then ideas. So i went to brainstorm and make myself settle on clothing itself and research on the motif on the clothes and why do the bride wear the real gown only on the last day of the marriage and what do they wear in between the 12 days. I also thought of peranakan culture is actually the mixture of chinese, malay and indian culture. Then I start to think of picking out the similarity from the different culture.

After brainstorming, i went to research on the kebaya, its orgin then the motif on it. The motif used on their clothes are usually flowers, butterflies, dragon etc. The flower usually used is peony. On the next post, i will show the mindmap and notes that i have done.

New layout & new ideas.

After friday's presentation, we realised that our concept was abit off and too broad for a topic as we want to show the different stages in a peranakan wedding preparations.

So after our 1st consultation for this week, we came out with several ideas of how we could expand about our peranakan wedding exhibitions.

So we've decided to do on peranakan wedding garments since in the exihibiton, that was the least showcase of their wedding garments. We want to evoke the visitor's curiosity to know how many clothes they wore throughtout the 12 days processions.

So i did some rough sketches of the layout. basically we want to play with the space provided and make it interesting.

Interim Presentation

our first interim presentation took place today at LT-M1. we had first started of with the MG's podcast, followed by our objectives, values, research and interactivity.

our group's objective is to encourage play and let the users gain experiences through the exhibits. and also, to let them learn about the peranakan's culture in a more interesting way.

Our Goals is to let the users be able to bring back a great experience, have fun and learn the peranakan's culture through the exhibits.

our research presentation consisted of the matchmaking, Lap Chai, Sang Ee, preparation days and the wedding eve.

An overview of the exhibit

at the center of the exhibit, will be where the 2 portraits, and the sireh box be at. when a person is to enter the room, a ray of light, will e projected on the sireh box, indicating to the user that he or she should touch the box. upon opening the box, a projection of the different spices used for making sireh will be projected from the top of the on the wall. the users will also be able to pick up and try to smell the spices.

after the ending of the sireh activity, the video portrait will start playing. the video will be about a father and mother, discusing about their daughter's wedding.

another interaction will be the Chiu Thau process. should the motion sensor detect any visitor/s walking by, they will be prompt to touch the comb. When the visitor touches the comb, a projection of the user will be shown on a mirror, but with the bride sitting in front of the visitor. the bride will then ask the user to help her in the chiu thau process by holding the comb and using gestures. after the process, the delighted bride, will explain the purpose of the whole process which the user had just performed.

this section requires a page boy to be present and do some activity too, if there's no one to take this role, the page boy's role will be controlled by the system.

When the motion sensors detect that a visitor is near by the window, noises can be heard by the users. when the user open the window, they will be able to view a video on the onion peeling day, which is a day, relatives gather together to peel onion for the wedding's use.

and on the right side of the wall, will be a projection for users to play catch the motifs game. users are required to catch all the motifs in the same color as the net they are using. the first to be ble to collect all the motifs will be rewarded with stickers of motif.

before the start of the game, the significant of each motif are shown. users can choose if they want to skip the introduction or watch the introduciton.

Concept V1 Visualisation

Today,
we discussed about how our exhibits is going to be like with all the interactivity and also educating the audience at the same time.

We did a sketch out of our very 1st exibition.

We did a processions sketch to illustrate the positionings of the items itself and also how do we install the interactivity in some of the items as we wouldnt want a stiff exhibits and boring words.

We did a draft setup for us to get a proper start of the exhibition.
More refinements and upgrading of ideas will be done to develop this concept further.

Concept Sketch

We decided to sketch out ideas ttha we find relevant to the whole idea.
So, we sketch out random ideas of an exhxibits and explore the possiblites of it in an exhibition.
Basically we played around with the space and also experimenting different kind of booth ideas and exhibits that we want.

We also tried to find interesting exhibits as a reference
of how do they make it work as an exhibitions and attracts visitors & the target audience.

We also did more research about the wedding to keep the knowledge coming in
and also, by doing that, it brings us to another level of understanding about the peranakan culture itself.

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

and to update on our 3 initial ideas.

1st idea

user will be able to carry the umbrella and be part of the wedding ceremony. when the user carry the umbrella, there will be a projection of the attire down on their clothes.

2nd idea

a passage way of portaits or images will be hanged on the side of a walkway. the presence of a user walking by or stopping in front of the image, will caused the images of married Perankans to start playing which will talk about their wedding experiences. when the user is to continue walking, the video will fade out and stop playing.

When the user enters the next room, there will be a 3D projection of the wedding procession going on. the users can choose either to be the audience, bride or the groom. to be the bride or groom, the user will only have to step in the place of the bride or groom. with the help of pressure pads, the 3d projection will be stopped, and only the clothes will be projected on the user. standing in place of the bride/groom, the users will be required to walk through the procession in the same/similar manner of the bride/groom, however, the user can choose to leave anytime, as the image of the bride/groom will be projected should the user leave the scene.

with the help of audio and moving background images, the feel of the users being in the scene as either part of the audience, or the bride and groom can be stimulated.

3rd idea

our 3rd idea is based on audio. users will be able to be the mucisians of the wedding procession, where they can play the different musical instruments. in a quiet museum, the loud and lively noise of the instruments will attrach the attentation of other visitors. upon sensing the increase of the number of people, the atmosphere of the procession will be more lively, i.e. the music will be louder, there will be an increase of the amount of people in the background.

Shuyun
On monday, we went down to the peranakan museum again. We want to see the different exhibit in the wedding section and decided to pick the wedding procession as our theme.
We did research and pictures of the exhibit can try to find what is lack in the exhibit.

When i go for the first time to the museum, i was attracted to the culture and the atmosphere at the museum but when i slowly walk and look through the information i felt that there is too much of reading and after some time i feel that i will slowly lose attention. When i go for the second time, i noticed that i actually lose interest in it. After knowing the culture, there wasn't much other things that i makes me want to o back for the second time.

For today, after our first consultation, we decide to research more and gather more information and tried to find the different significance and try to understand how the whole wedding is carried out. After that we came out with 3 draft ideas. After the 2nd consultation on our ideas, the lectures state that our ideas are similar and the type of interaction are on the surface. There isn't much interaction and have not meet the requirements. Therefore we decide to pull in other factors and think interactivity base on multisensory and participatory.

Peranakan Wedding Processions

We went to the Peranakan museum again today but this time with our new members. We have to look in depth about the peranakan wedding that were assigned to us.

So we have decided to work on wedding processions and how it goes about. We also found that in a peranakan wedding, they held their wedding ceremony for 12 days or in their terms, Duabelashari.

Other than looking at the processions itself, we also did a check out the other important traditions in peranakans which we could work on and expand the ideas for the processions so that we are able to play with more interactive ideas.

Other than that,
we did a short research about the peranakans itself to get all of us on the ball of gaining knowledge about their culture and also to learn more about them so that we could proceed brainstorming our ideas with the help from the history itself.
